5.5 earthquake hits Cairo, Egypt, is felt in parts of Israel
Egypt's Greater Cairo region was shaken by an earthquake measuring a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter scale early on Monday morning. The National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics said the epicentre was located in East Cairo at a depth of 10 km.
The tremor was felt in southern and into central Israel, all the way to towns on the outskirts of Jerusalem, according to local media.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The Egyptian Red Crescent urged residents to stay away from old and dilapidated buildings, which are common in some of Cairo’s densely populated, working-class neighborhoods. Egypt’s health minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar ordered emergency response plans activated across the country, including for hospitals nationwide to raise their level of preparedness.
