opinion Political drama and the situation with Iran
The situation with Iran and beyond is about to get very interesting. Both the Israeli elections and the U.S. midterm elections have been used as points of references by respective leaders for decision-making in the Iran war. The Israeli elections, interestingly, are at an impasse. Attacks have persisted on commercial ships in and around the Strait of Hormuz. Leading up to the U.S. midterm elections there had been both military movements and indirect negotiations.
Israeli Elections Impasse
Israel has a parliamentary system of government with no term limits [1]. There are reports that the U.S. administration may intervene in the determination of Israel’s governing coalition as the Israeli elections have had inconclusive results [2]. Furthermore, there are suspicions by Israel’s elections committee of bribery influencing the votes among Israeli Arabs [3]. Allegations came from Likud, the political party of the incumbent prime minister [3]. In response to that allegation, the aspirant of the opposing bloc has accused Likud of attempting to delegitimize the election results [4]. Investigations into foreign interference in the form of bribery from both Turkey and Qatar are ongoing [5]. Arab parties were elected an unprecedented number of seats in the 120-member parliament known as the Knesset [3]. The prime minister is determined by a majority of 61 members or more [1]. Interestingly, the results of the October 27th election are a three-way split, with two main opposing blocs and thirdly, Arab parties of which neither of the two main blocs are willing to align with. On November 1st, the chairman of Israel’s election committee, along with the Shin Bet chief, election committee acting director-general, and attorney general of Israel, affirmed that the election for the Knesset was conducted properly, and that the results of the election would not be overturned [4]. This affirmation has been rebuffed by the Likud party, arguing that the investigations have not concluded [4]. It is reported that the incumbent prime minister has since urged the U.S. president for resumed attacks on Iran immediately after the U.S. midterm elections on November 3rd [6]. Resumption of open war could delay the resolution of the Israeli government, in which case the incumbent would continue as prime minister, and allow leadership in intense military action to claim decisive victory and thereby increase his standing in Israel if there is another election.
Recent Incidents
On October 29th at about 25 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman, the M/T Louise 1 was damaged from blasts of two explosives attached to its hull by way of a small boat [7]. These explosives are known as limpet mines, and this is the first report since 2019 of Iran using this method of attack [8]. Also on October 29th was a separate attack on the M/T Riti about 12 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman [7]. On October 30th, about 40 nautical miles south of Lavan Island, Iran, was an attack on the M/T Al Mayeda, a liquified natural gas (LNG) carrier owned by Qatar Gas Transport Company (Nakilat), and Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned the attack [9]. On November 1st, the M/T Largo Atom was struck by two drones in the Persian Gulf about 72 nautical miles to the east of Ras Al Khafjl, Saudi Arabia, causing a power outage on the vessel [9].
Military Movements and Deal Prospects
Over the past week, more than 10 U.S. military cargo jets have flown into Israel and several more into U.S. bases in partner Arab countries [10]. The U.S president has threatened renewed attacks on Iran after the U.S. midterm elections if a deal is not reached. Iran has asserted these conditions for ending the war: end the U.S. blockade, release Iranian frozen assets, remove oil sanctions, end military action against Iran, withdraw U.S. forces from the region, and compensate Iran for war damages [8]. Those are concessions that the U.S. administration might make, except that compensation for war damages would be problematic. The U.S. vice president in his recent letter to the leadership of Iran acknowledged Iran’s interests of rebuilding its economy and national sovereignty [8]. According to the president of Iran, the supreme leader of Iran has given “certain authorities” to the Iranian administration for negotiations with the U.S. through mediators, and Iran tries “to solve the problem with dialogue” [11].
Biblical Perspective
This article summarizes recent events without political bias and using credible sources as references, but also with a Biblical perspective. The lesson of the fig tree, a parable about the reestablishment of Israel in the times referred to as the later days, is often referenced to Matthew 24:32-34, but it also occurs in parallel passages of Mark 13:28-30 and Luke 21:29-32. The account in Luke includes a detail omitted by the others, that is, “the fig tree and all the trees”, indicating Israel and other nations in relation to Israel. From the time that Israel was reestablished, there was a corresponding change in other nations in relation to Israel. And so, there has since been a culmination. According to Luke 21:28, "And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads, for your redemption is drawing near”.
