The Basij is a paramilitary force subordinate to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, widely known for enforcing the regime’s authority and suppressing dissent.

For decades, Basij units have been accused of intimidating citizens, policing social behavior, and violently cracking down on protests across Iran.

During the last wave of nationwide demonstrations, the force was reportedly involved in deadly confrontations with protesters. Because of its central role in maintaining the regime’s internal control, some analysts argue that weakening the Basij could significantly affect the stability of Iran’s leadership.
