Kibbutz Aza, on Israel’s western border with Gaza, is small community located within the internationally recognized boundaries of Israel, with stunning panoramic views and friendly residents who have learned to live under extremely stressful circumstances.
Chen will show us around and share about life growing up on the kibbutz during a time when she was able to travel to Gaza’s beaches and shops up until the year 2000.
Her life today is quite different.
In late 2005, Israel unilaterally pulled its Jewish residents and military out of the Gaza Strip leaving the Palestinian Authority in charge. One year later, Hamas – an internationally recognized terrorist organization – rose to power, marking a turning point.
Shortly after, rocket fire and warning sirens became a near daily occurrence.
During this tour, we will learn how this has affected the community, see the physical damage it has caused and get a better understanding of what it’s like to raise children in an atmosphere rife with a constant fear of danger.
Despite their anxieties, Kibbutz Aza residents hope for peace in the future and some genuinely believe that a two-state solution – Palestinians and Israelis living side by side – is possible.
Join us as we hear about their hopes and dreams for peace with their neighbors once again.
Chen has spoken at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) conference and has guided Christian and Jewish delegations, legislative groups and other visitors around her kibbutz.
